ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The Fountainhead Residency provides artists an environment to create, converse, inspire and be inspired outside of daily routines and traditional confines of their home life.  From the moment artists arrive they’re immersed in the visual beauty of Miami and the color and depth of the local community.  In addition to creating work while at The Residency; artists attend openings and talks, visit museums and galleries, and receive vital feedback from art professionals through one-on-one studio visits and public open houses.  Artists live communally in a 1950’s Miami Modern home flooded with natural light and the energy that comes with it.  The home is located in the heart of Miami’s cultural community with most museums, galleries, private collections, alternative spaces and performing arts venues are all within less than 7 miles.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

Are artists asked to donate a work of art?

No, artists are not asked to donate a work.

What costs does The Residency cover?

There is no cost to artists. We provide roundtrip airfare from your home* and living and working accommodations. *Airfare may at times be covered by collaborating partners and/or galleries but it is never the responsibility of the artist.

How far in advance are you scheduling residents?

Residencies are schedule about 6-12 months in advance but life happens.  There are sometimes shifts in the schedule to due artists getting exhibition opportunities and unexpected projects.  We try to remain flexible.

How long can an artist stay at The Residency?

One month.

Where will I be working?

There are three main work spaces in the Residency plus plenty of outdoor space.  There is a 400 sq ft attached garage and approximately 600 sq ft of open space that is divided by a moveable wall to create two studios, each with a large desk and additional work tables inside the main house. In addition to space at The Residency we also have The Fountainhead Studios located less than 5 minutes from the house.  There we have a studio that has about 600 square feet in which to work.

Will I have my own room to sleep?

Yes, each resident will have their own room to sleep, unless previously discussed.

What is the bathroom situation?

Depending on the room you will either share a bathroom with one person or you will have your own private bath.  The residence has three spacious bedrooms and two baths.

How or where do most artists eat?

Most residents chose to eat at the home.  There is a full kitchen with all the tools needed for cooking.  The supermarket is in walking and biking distance and we'll happily take you there as soon as you arrive.  There are several restaurants in walking distance and plenty of delivery options for those who prefer not to cook.  You might get lucky, many artists share cooking duties and eat as a family.  We've had many artists as talented in the kitchen as they are in their studio.  ;-)

How will I get around in Miami?

The Residency is centrally located close to Miami International Airport, South Beach, Wynwood Art District, The Design District and downtown.  There are bikes for residents to use.  Uber and Lyft are both here in Miami and reasonably priced.  Public transportation is within walking distance but, is often not the most convenient mode of transportation depending on destination.

Are artists able to sell work during the residency?

Absolutely.  Nothing would make us happier than our visiting artists leaving with money in their pockets. We ask that artists respect their gallery relationships.

Can family or friends join me while I’m in Miami?

Not without prior approval.  We cannot commit to allowing anyone visitors but, we’re open.  The purpose of your time here is to dedicate time to yourself and your practice without the distractions of daily routines and responsibilities at home.

What is expected of me while I’m there?

You are expected to invest your time and energy in developing your practice and making connections that can benefit your career.  You will be invited to many local activities but your time is your own. It’s up to you whether you join. We will ask that you take part in any Fountainhead experiences while you’re here including Welcome Cocktail, Artists Presentations and month-end Open House.

You must respect the belongings and work of other resident’s, our neighbors, and the home itself and all it’s furnishings.  Disrespectful and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and could result in being asked to leave early.

Explain the opportunity for a show/artist talk and studio visits.

Connecting with our local community is an important part of the Residency.  Upon arrival we meet with artists individually to discuss their goals for their time at The Fountainhead Residency.  We work closely with many local curators, artists, gallery owners and collectors so this opportunity is limited only by their availability.  We will do all we can to fulfill your requests and goals while here.

Each month we host an Artists’ Presentation and an Open House, as well as virtual activations to help you connect with our supporters and expand your network during and after your residency.
