Artist’s Statement

Bopape’s works takes on different forms in various mediums from video, to installation,  painting and 'situations', often engaging ideas of the performative object, the disruption of a linear narrative, chaos, aesthetics, memory and the stuff of the immaterial....she was born in 1981 in Polokwane, South Africa.

She attained her visual arts B-Tech from Durban Institute of Technology in 2004, thereafter she was a resident at de Ateliers in Amsterdam, from 2005-7. She has exhibited her work in numerous group shows internationally, including Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum in New York in 2009; Rebelle: Art and Feminism 1969-2009 at the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, The Netherlands (2009) and pAss(ages) in Johannesburg. She is a 2010 Columbia University MFA graduate , was the winner of the 2008 MTN New Contemporaries award and a 2010 Thieme award nominee. She has also had numerous solo shows internationally most recently “Long live the immaterial…effect no. 55” 2010.
