Artist’s Statement

Molly Smith was born in 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri. She spent the second half of her childhood in Huntsville, Alabama, before obtaining her undergraduate degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. Smith obtained her MFA from Columbia University in 2004.

Smith works between drawing, collage, sculpture and photography. She has an affinity for found objects, often creating tension between abstract materials. Her work in past exhibitions is generally been small scale and exhibited in a variety of ways: on the wall, on the floor, on shelves and on tabletops.

Smith’s first solo show, One Wave, One Day at KS Art, 2006, was reviewed as a Critics’ Picks on Artforum.com by Lauren O’Neill Butler. Her second solo exhibition, Between You and Me, took place in 2008, also at KS Art. The exhibition was reviewed in New York Magazine as well as The New Yorker.Smith’s most recent solo exhibition, Whether at Kate Werble Gallery, 2010, was reviewed by Suzanne Hudson for Artforum and shortlisted in The New Yorker for the duration of the show. 

Recent group exhibitions include Come Through, at Sikkema Jenkins & Co, NY, in October, 2010. The show was reviewed by Lauren O’Neill Butler for Artforum.com.   In the spring of 2011, Smith included new work in a group exhibition at the Jolie-Laide Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and is represented by Kate Werble Gallery, New York, NY.
