Lydia Rubio

Painting and Unique Journals

Artist's Statement

My work explores a pairing of opposites: rational geometric structures in contrast with gestural and spontaneous free forms, geometric grids and painterly gestures superimposed, calligraphic gestures floating over atmospheric spaces. The paintings suggest movements found in nature: in micro and macro scales of living forms, animal and human migrations patterns.

The recent works represent my reaction against the esthetics of excess and the extreme visual and verbal turbulence within today’s world: refuge, retreat into self, silence. They connect with Russian Constructivism and the Arte Concreto movement in Cuban and Brazilian art, editing the elements of painting in a new synthesis. Some of these works are open works, interactive polyptychs of multiple installations.

Lydia Rubio’s paintings and artist books are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Indiana University, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, University of Southern California at Los Angeles, The Wolfsonian FIU, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Miami-Dade Community College, Lowe Art Museum, Cuban Heritage Collection of the University of Miami, the Cintas Collection, Bryn Mawr College, and Lehigh University Art Galleries, and important private collections in New York, Miami, and Europe. Ms. Rubio has completed several large-scale public art commissions in RDU Airport NC, The Port of Miami and The Women’s Park, Miami Dade County.
