Artist Statement
Janine Eggert and Philipp Ricklefs' practice is multidisciplinary, exploring the categories of sculpture, installation, printmaking and video. Drawing upon humor, philosophy and technology, the works investigate space as a setting for human actions when the artists literally disassemble space into it's molecular structures or when they make resonant cavities visible. The works often deal with the phenomenon of the sublime, when they question terms of representation and attribution by exposing objects to destructive forces or placing them in abeyance.
Eggert and Ricklefs' work often takes place site-related in specific architecture. Important source for them are research trips to industrial monuments and architectural fantasies. On these travels they analyze the legacy of technical or scientific facilities that were once pioneering utopias in their field. These research trips have led them so far to remote areas in the USA but also in Europe and the Mediterranean when traveling on a container ship to Egypt. They study the psychological components that an experience the sublime moment can have on the human psyche and their own experiences in these places are their primary source.
Eggert and Ricklefs' received their Diploma from Hochschule für bildende Künste, Hamburg. They have exhibited throughout Germany and internationally, including shows at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna; Lynda Erickson Gallery Project Space, New York and Künstlerhaus Lauenburg and featuring a range of large scale sculptures and architectural interventions. They started working together in 2005 and live and work in Berlin, Germany.
