Born in 1989, Lyon, France

Lives and Works in Tapachula (MX) and Lyon (FR)

Escoffier holds a BFA and MFA from École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon (2013). She was the recipient of the Fondation Kenza grant in 2013, and did a postgraduate residency in Mexico City at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura (La Esmeralda). Photography, generally understood as a mechanical process of image capture, is transformed in Julie Escoffier’s work into a chemical ground where images seem to appear almost by accident. Her desire is to transform the elements that form photography (mineral salts, acids, iodine, iron salts, sulphur derivatives, etc.) into a fascinating and multiple visual and material research. Using certain organic compounds (flour glues, in particular) she opens her work to decomposition and, simultaneously, to one of the main factors of photography, time itself. Julie Escoffier is co-director of the Residency Program 'Dedazo' based in Chiapas (MX) and member of the curatorial platform AGUAS.
